The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the vast network of physical objects ("things") that are embedded with sensors, software, actuators, and network connectivity, allowing them to collect, exchange, and act upon data automatically over the internet without human intervention.
- Origin of Term: The term "Internet of Things" was coined by Kevin Ashton in 1999 during a presentation at Procter & Gamble (P&G).
Key Components of an IoT System:
- 1Sensors & Actuators: Sensors detect changes in physical environment (temperature, light, humidity, motion, smoke, GPS location). Actuators perform physical actions (turning on a fan, locking a door, opening a water valve).
- 2Connectivity (Network): Transmits collected data via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Cellular (4G/5G), RFID, or Zigbee.
- 3Data Processing (Cloud Platform): Software processes sensor data in the cloud (e.g., detecting if factory machine temperature exceeded 80°C).
- 4User Interface (Mobile App / Dashboard): Notifies the user or triggers automatic actions (e.g., sends mobile notification: "Front door unlocked").
Real-World Applications of IoT:
- Smart Homes: Smart bulb turned on by phone, Alexa voice assistant controlling AC.
- Precision Agriculture: Soil moisture sensors trigger drip irrigation pumps only when crops need water, saving electricity and groundwater.
- Smart Cities: Automated LED streetlights that brighten when cars approach and dim during empty nights; smart trash bins that alert municipal trucks when full.
- Healthcare Wearables: Smartwatches monitoring heart rate, oxygen level (SpO2), and alerting emergency contacts in case of a sudden fall.
2. Understanding Big Data Analytics
Every minute, millions of YouTube videos are watched, crores of UPI payments are processed, Google handles billions of searches, and millions of WhatsApp messages are sent. Traditional database software like Microsoft Excel or standard SQL cannot store or process this immense avalanche of information. This vast ocean of information is called Big Data.
