Types of Software: Application, System, Utility (सॉफ्टवेयर के प्रकार)

Software represents the intangible brainpower of the computer. Without software, computer hardware cannot perform any meaningful operation.

In computer science and the NIELIT CCC syllabus, software is broadly classified into three major categories: System Software, Application Software, and Utility Software.

1. System Software (सिस्टम सॉफ्टवेयर)

System Software is foundational software designed to control, manage, and operate computer hardware directly. It provides a platform on top of which application software can run.

Key examples of System Software:

  1. 1
Operating Systems (OS): The primary master manager of the computer. Examples: Windows 10, Windows 11, Linux (Ubuntu, Red Hat), macOS, Android.
  2. 2
Device Drivers (ड्राइवर): Specialized software that allows the OS to communicate with specific hardware peripherals (e.g. Printer Driver, Graphics Driver, Sound Driver).
  3. 3
Language Translators (भाषा अनुवादक): Computers only understand raw binary machine language (0 and 1). Translators convert human-readable source code into machine code:
  • Assembler: Converts Assembly language (mnemonics like MOV, ADD) into machine language.
  • Compiler: Translates the entire high-level program at once into machine code before execution (e.g. C, C++).
  • Interpreter: Translates and executes high-level code line-by-line sequentially (e.g. Python, JavaScript).

2. Application Software (एप्लीकेशन सॉफ्टवेयर)

Application Software (commonly called "Apps") is software developed to help end-users perform specific tasks, solve problems, or entertain themselves.

Application software is subdivided into two types:

  1. 1
General Purpose Application Software: Designed for broad, everyday public use.
  • Word Processors: MS Word, LibreOffice Writer, Google Docs (for letters, essays, notices).
  • Spreadsheets: MS Excel, LibreOffice Calc, Google Sheets (for accounting, budgets, marks).
  • Presentation Software: MS PowerPoint, LibreOffice Impress (for seminars, lectures).
  • Web Browsers: Google Chrome, Firefox, Edge (for internet surfing).
  1. 1
Specialized / Customized Application Software (Tailor-made): Built for a specific company or organization according to their unique business requirements.
  • Banking Software: Finacle (used by SBI and PNB).
  • Railway Ticketing System: CRIS / PRS software for Indian Railways.
  • Accounting Software: Tally Prime, Marg ERP.
  • School Management Systems: Student fee, attendance, and report card generators.

3. Utility Software (यूटिलिटी सॉफ्टवेयर - मेंटेनेंस टूल्स)

Utility Software consists of supportive maintenance programs designed to optimize, protect, analyze, and maintain the smooth, healthy functioning of your computer system.

Common Utility Software in Windows:

  • Antivirus & Anti-Malware: Protects computer from viruses, spyware, and ransomware (e.g. Windows Defender, Quick Heal, Kaspersky).
  • Disk Defragmenter (Drive Optimizer): Rearranges scattered, fragmented data clusters on mechanical hard drives so files load faster.
  • Disk Cleanup Tool: Scans and removes temporary junk files, browser cache, and Recycle Bin items to free up disk space.
  • File Compression Utilities: Compresses large files into smaller zip archives for easy email sharing (e.g. WinRAR, 7-Zip, WinZip).
  • Backup & Restore Utilities: Creates automated backup copies of important documents to external hard drives or cloud storage.

Multiple Choice Questions

1. Which type of language translator translates an entire high-level program into machine language in a single pass before execution?

A. Assembler B. Interpreter C. Compiler D. Text Editor Answer: C Explanation: A Compiler processes and translates the entire source code file into an executable binary machine code file at once, reporting all syntax errors collectively.

2. Under which category does software like Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Calc, and Tally belong?

A. System Software B. Firmware C. Application Software D. Hardware Driver Answer: C Explanation: These are Application Software programs created to fulfill specific end-user business and productivity tasks like document writing, accounting, and financial analysis.

3. What is the primary purpose of a "Disk Defragmenter" utility?

A. To detect and delete computer viruses B. To reorganize physically scattered file fragments on an HDD so files open faster C. To compress video files for email D. To install new operating systems Answer: B Explanation: Over time, files become fragmented across different physical sectors of a hard disk. Disk Defragmenter reorganizes these fragmented clusters contiguously, boosting drive read speed.

4. Which software translator converts assembly language mnemonics (e.g. MOV, ADD) directly into binary machine code?

A. Compiler B. Interpreter C. Assembler D. Linker Answer: C Explanation: An Assembler is a low-level language translator specifically dedicated to converting assembly language symbolic instructions (mnemonics) into binary machine language.

5. What category of software is 7-Zip or WinRAR?

A. Operating System B. Compression Utility Software C. Device Driver D. Word Processor Answer: B Explanation: 7-Zip and WinRAR are file compression utility tools that bundle and compress multiple files into smaller .zip or .rar archive containers.
