Page Setup, Header, Footer, and Page Numbering
Page Setup, Header, Footer, and Page Numbering (पेज सेटअप और हेडर/फुटर)
Before printing official government forms or college projects, you must configure page geometry: margins, paper size, page orientation, and automatic header/footer page numbers.
1. Page Orientation (पेज ओरिएंटेशन)
Page Orientation refers to the visual direction in which a document is displayed and printed:
- 1Portrait (लंबवत - डिफ़ॉल्ट):
- The page is taller than it is wide (Height > Width).
- Standard for letters, novels, applications, and official government memos.
- 1Landscape (क्षैतिज / आड़ा):
- The page is wider than it is tall (Width > Height).
- Standard for wide financial spreadsheets, large accounting tables, certificates, and presentation slides.
2. Standard Paper Sizes
Printers support various paper trays:
- A4 Size (सबसे लोकप्रिय): The international standard sheet for office printing ($210 \text{ mm} \times 297 \text{ mm}$ or $8.27" \times 11.69"$).
- Letter Size: Standard in the USA ($8.5" \times 11"$).
- Legal Size: Taller sheet used in Indian courts and legal stamp papers ($8.5" \times 14"$).
3. Page Margins (पेज मार्जिन)
A Margin is the blank white border area between the edge of the paper and the actual typed text.
- Standard margins are: Top, Bottom, Left, and Right (typically set to 0.75" or 1.0").
- Gutter Margin (गटर मार्जिन): An additional extra margin space added to the Left side (or Top) of pages specifically reserved for book binding, stapling, or hole punching, ensuring no printed text gets concealed inside the bound fold.
4. Header, Footer, and Automated Page Numbering
- Header (हेडर - सबसे ऊपर):
- Content that appears automatically in the top margin of every single page throughout the document.
- Typical contents: Book Title, Chapter Name, Institute Logo.
- Footer (फुटर - सबसे नीचे):
- Content that appears automatically in the bottom margin of every page.
- Typical contents: Author Name, Confidentiality Disclaimer, Date.
- Automated Page Numbering (पृष्ठ संख्या):
- Never type page numbers manually! If you insert or delete paragraphs, manual numbers will become wrong.
- In LibreOffice Writer: Click inside Header/Footer $\implies$ Click Insert $\implies$ Field $\implies$ Page Number (or Page Count). The software automatically increments numbers sequentially ($1, 2, 3...$).
Multiple Choice Questions
1. What are the two types of Page Orientation available in word processors?
A. Front and Back B. Portrait and Landscape C. Vertical and Diagonal D. Top and Bottom Answer: B Explanation: The two standard page orientations are Portrait (vertical tall layout, which is the default) and Landscape (horizontal wide layout).
2. What is the standard physical dimension of an A4 size paper sheet?
A. $210 imes 297 ext{ mm}$ B. $150 imes 200 ext{ mm}$ C. $8.5 imes 14 ext{ inches}$ D. $300 imes 400 ext{ mm}$ Answer: A Explanation: International standard A4 paper measures exactly $210 imes 297 ext{ millimeters}$ ($8.27 imes 11.69 ext{ inches}$).
3. What is the extra margin added to the binding side of a document called?
A. Boundary Margin B. Gutter Margin C. Header Margin D. Safe Zone Answer: B Explanation: A Gutter Margin adds extra blank space to the inside/binding edge of pages so that printed text is not obscured when the pages are bound or stapled together into a book.
4. In which margin does the "Header" appear by default?
A. Bottom margin of odd pages only B. Top margin of every page C. Left margin D. Center of the page Answer: B Explanation: The Header is printed in the top margin area of every page in the document or section.
