Inserting Images into Slides

You can insert imagery via several routes:

   Via Ribbon: Go to Insert > Pictures:

• This Device: Browse high-res photos stored locally on your computer.
• Stock Images: Built-in Microsoft 365 library of millions of curated, royalty-free high-resolution photos, cutout people, icons, and illustrations.
• Online Pictures: Search Bing images with Creative Commons filtering.

   Via Content Placeholder: Click the centered Pictures icon inside any content layout placeholder. The image will automatically size itself to fit within the placeholder's boundaries.

   Drag-and-Drop: Drag image files directly from Windows File Explorer onto the slide canvas.

The Picture Format Ribbon Tab

Selecting any image brings up the contextual Picture Format tab:

• Corrections: Adjust Sharpness/Softness and Brightness/Contrast presets.
• Color: Tweak Color Saturation, Color Tone (Warm/Cool temperature), or Recolor (e.g., convert photo to monochromatic brand blue or sepia).
• Artistic Effects: Apply textured filters such as Pencil Sketch, Watercolor Sponge, Film Grain, or Glass.
• Picture Styles & Borders: Apply rounded corners, subtle dropshadows, or modern frames.

Mastering Crop Techniques

Cropping allows you to reframe subjects and fit photos into specific geometric spaces:

• Standard Crop: Click Picture Format > Crop. Black crop handles appear along the perimeter. Drag inward to trim unwanted areas, then click outside the image or press Enter.
• Crop to Shape: Click the arrow beneath Crop > Crop to Shape and choose any shape (e.g., Circle, Oval, Rounded Rectangle, Hexagon). PowerPoint instantly masks the photo into that vector shape.
• Aspect Ratio Locking: Crop to exact proportions such as 16:9 (widescreen), 1:1 (square headshot), or 4:3.
• Fill vs. Fit:
• Fill: Scales image to completely cover the shape boundaries without distorting proportions (excess edges cropped).
• Fit: Scales entire image so all pixels are visible within the bounding box.

Remove Background Tool (Instant Cutout)

PowerPoint's background removal tool lets you isolate subjects without Photoshop:

   Select the photo and click Picture Format > Remove Background.

   PowerPoint highlights areas detected as background in bright magenta.

   Click Mark Areas to Keep (green pen) to draw lines over details that were mistakenly flagged for removal.
