AutoSum and Status Bar Calculations

Adding columns and rows of numbers is the single most common task in spreadsheet work. Microsoft Excel provides two instant tools to eliminate manual typing: the one-click AutoSum tool and the live Status Bar calculation engine.

Mastering the AutoSum Tool

Rather than manually typing =SUM(A1:A50):

   Click the empty cell immediately beneath a column of numbers (or immediately to the right of a row of numbers).

• Highlight your entire table of numbers, plus one extra blank column on the right and one extra blank row at the bottom.
• Press Alt + = once! Excel instantly calculates all horizontal row totals AND all vertical column totals simultaneously across the entire table!

Other Built-in AutoSum Functions

Clicking the downward arrow next to the AutoSum button reveals 4 additional instant calculation presets:

• Average: Automatically writes =AVERAGE(range).
• Count Numbers: Automatically writes =COUNT(range) to count filled numeric cells.
• Max: Automatically writes =MAX(range) to find the peak value.
• Min: Automatically writes =MIN(range) to find the lowest value.

Instant Status Bar Calculations

When you need to quickly check a total, average, or count without adding formula rows to your sheet:

Customizing the Status Bar

• Minimum: Shows the smallest number in the selection.
• Maximum: Shows the largest number in the selection.
