While the Macro Recorder is great for simple formatting, building robust automation requires looking under the hood. The VBA Editor (Visual Basic Editor) is the integrated development environment (IDE) where you write custom subroutines, control program flow with loops and conditions, and build custom user-defined worksheet functions (UDFs).
1. Navigating the Visual Basic Editor (VBE)
Press Alt + F11 to launch the Visual Basic Editor:
VBE Architecture:
├── Project Explorer (Ctrl + R) : Hierarchical tree of workbooks, sheets, and code modules.
├── Properties Window (F4) : Configuration settings for the selected object.
├── Code Window (F7) : Where you write and read VBA code lines.
└── Immediate Window (Ctrl + G) : Interactive debugging sandbox for testing expressions.
Where Code Lives: The Standard Module
To write reusable macros:
- Right-click VBAProject (YourWorkbook.xlsm) in the Project Explorer.
- Choose Insert > Module.
- Code written inside a standard Module is accessible from anywhere in the workbook!

Every macro begins with 'Sub Name()' and concludes with 'End Sub':

3. Essential VBA Concepts: Objects, Properties & Methods
VBA controls Excel by manipulating the Excel Object Model:
- Object (Noun): What you are interacting with (e.g., 'Worksheets("Sales")', 'Range("A1")', 'ActiveWorkbook').
- Property (Adjective): An attribute or value of that object:
- 'Range("A1").Value = 5000'
- 'Range("A1").Font.Bold = True'
- 'Range("A1").Interior.Color = RGB(0, 102, 204)'
- Method (Verb): An action performed by or on the object:
- 'Range("A1:D10").ClearContents'
- 'Worksheets("Summary").Copy'
- 'ActiveWorkbook.Save'
4. Writing a Custom Worksheet Function (UDF)
You can write custom functions in VBA that appear alongside native Excel functions like SUM and VLOOKUP:
Function CalculateGST(Amount As Double, Rate As Double) As Double
' Custom User Defined Function for Tax Calculation
CalculateGST = Amount * (Rate / 100)

In any cell on your worksheet, you can now type: '=CalculateGST(10000, 18)' and get 1,800!
