Converting data from one type to another (e.g. converting floating-point to integer or numeric types) is a frequent requirement. While legacy C permitted the dangerous (type)value syntax, Modern C++ replaces it with explicit, checked cast operators: static_cast.
In traditional C:
A C-style cast indiscriminately attempts:
const_cast (stripping constness)static_cast (valid type conversions)reinterpret_cast (reinterpreting raw memory bytes)If you make a typo or convert incompatible pointer hierarchies, a C-style cast compiles silently, causing undefined behavior, memory corruption, and silent data loss.
static_cast<Type>(expr)static_cast performs explicit conversions between compatible types at compile-time. If the types are incompatible, the compiler halts with an explicit error:
static_cast: Standard conversions between compatible types.dynamic_cast: Safe polymorphic downcasting with runtime RTTI checks.const_cast: Adds or removes const qualification.reinterpret_cast: Low-level bit pattern reinterpretation (hardware/drivers).Continue learning with hands-on practice, examples, and exercises in the upcoming topic.
