🚀 Evolution of C++: From "C with Classes" to Modern C++ (C++20/C++23)

Introduction

C++ is one of the most enduring, high-performance programming languages in computer science. Created in 1979 by Danish computer scientist Bjarne Stroustrup at Bell Laboratories, C++ began as an enhancement to the C language known as "C with Classes". Today, C++ powers operating systems (Windows, macOS, Linux kernels), game engines (Unreal Engine), high-frequency financial trading desks, aerospace systems, and AI infrastructure (TensorFlow, PyTorch C++ runtimes).

⏳ The Evolution Timeline

── "C with Classes" (Classes, member functions, basic inheritance)
│
── Renamed "C++" (Virtual functions, operator overloading, references)
│
── C++98 / C++03 (First ISO standard, STL: containers, algorithms, iterators)
│
── C++11 (The Modern Renaissance: auto, nullptr, move semantics, lambdas)
│
── C++14 (Generic lambdas, binary literals, constexpr expansion)
│
112017 ── C++17 (Structured binding, filesystem, std::optional, string_view)
│
132020 ── C++20 (Concepts, Ranges, Coroutines, Modules, Spaceship operator <=>)
│
152023 ── C++23 (std::print, std::expected, multidimensional subscript, deducing this)

🔑 Core Philosophies of C++

1
Zero-Overhead Principle: "What you don't use, you don't pay for. And further: What you do use, you couldn't hand code any better."
2
Direct Hardware Mapping: Native pointers, bitwise operations, fixed-width types, and predictable memory layout.
3
Value Semantics by Default: Unlike Java or Python where objects are referenced by heap pointers, C++ instances live directly on the stack unless explicitly dynamically allocated.
4
Strong, Static Typing: Type discrepancies are intercepted at compile time rather than crashing in production.

💻 Comparing Traditional C++ (C++98) vs Modern C++ (C++20)

Legacy C++98:

1#include <iostream>
2#include <vector>
3
4int main() {
5    std::vector<int> numbers;
6    numbers.push_back(10);
7    numbers.push_back(20);
8    numbers.push_back(30);
9
10    // Clunky iterator syntax
11    for (std::vector<int>::iterator it = numbers.begin(); it != numbers.end(); ++it) {
12        std::cout << *it << " ";
13    }
14    std::cout << std::endl;
15    return 0;
16}

Modern C++20:

1#include <iostream>
2#include <vector>
3
4int main() {
5    // Uniform brace initialization
6    const std::vector<int> numbers = {10, 20, 30};
7
8 // Range-based for loop with type deduction
9    for (const auto& num : numbers) {
10        std::cout << num << " ";
11    }
12    std::cout << '\n';
13    return 0;
14}

💡 Key Takeaways

C++ is not a superset of C; it is a multi-paradigm language (procedural, object-oriented, generic, and functional).
Modern C++ (C++11 through C++23) prioritizes type safety, RAII (Resource Acquisition Is Initialization), and expressive declarative code without compromising microsecond-level execution speeds.
In this course at MSK Institute, we adopt the modern dialect from Day 1.
