When clearing data or decommissioning obsolete database tables, developers often mix up three distinct SQL commands: DELETE, TRUNCATE TABLE, and DROP TABLE. Using the wrong command in production can cause severe downtime, unintended transaction rollbacks, or permanent data loss.

1. Comparing DELETE, TRUNCATE, and DROP

 DELETE FROM users;         --> DML: Removes rows one by one. Slow, logged, rollbackable.
 TRUNCATE TABLE users;      --> DDL: Wipes table space & resets AUTO_INCREMENT. Fast!
 DROP TABLE users;          --> DDL: Destroys entire table definition & data from disk!

Important Warning

[!CAUTION] If a table is referenced by an active Foreign Key constraint from another table, MySQL will block TRUNCATE TABLE, even if the child table is empty! In this scenario, you must either drop the foreign key or use DELETE FROM table.

Accidental Truncation: Because TRUNCATE is a DDL command, running it inside a START TRANSACTION block triggers an immediate implicit commit—meaning your transaction cannot be rolled back!
