To write effective queries and troubleshoot production database issues, you must understand MySQL's internal client-server architecture.

The Clients: Client software (such as the MySQL Command-Line Client, MySQL Workbench, DBeaver, or web backend apps written in Python, PHP, Java, or Node.js) connect to the server over TCP/IP network protocol (default port 3306).

The Server (mysqld): The background service (daemon on Linux, service on Windows) that listens for incoming connections, authenticates users, executes queries, and manages data files on disk.

2. Deep Dive: The 3 Core Server Layers

Layer 1: Connection & Authentication Layer

When a client connects, the server verifies username, host origin ('username'@'hostname'), and password.
Assigns each client connection a dedicated server execution thread.

Layer 2: SQL Server Core Layer

Parser: Converts the raw SQL string into an internal Parse Tree, checking for SQL syntax validity.
Preprocessor: Verifies table and column existence and checks user access privileges.
Optimizer: Evaluates various physical paths to satisfy the query (which index to use, which join algorithm to apply) and calculates an estimated execution cost to pick the fastest plan.

Layer 3: Pluggable Storage Engine Layer

A unique architectural feature of MySQL is its Pluggable Storage Engine API.
The server core does not know or care how bytes are saved on disk. It asks the storage engine: "Give me the next row matching key = 105."
InnoDB (Default): ACID-compliant, supports foreign keys, row-level locking, and crash recovery.
Memory Engine: Stores tables entirely in RAM for ultra-fast temporary lookups (lost on server reboot).
