For decades, Python programmers manipulated file paths using string functions in the os.path module (os.path.join, os.path.exists, os.path.split). Working with raw path strings was notoriously error-prone, requiring endless nested function calls and differing slash conventions across Windows (\) and Linux/macOS (/).
Python's standard pathlib module (PEP 428) revolutionizes this by introducing an Object-Oriented Filesystem Path API. Python's official documentation now explicitly recommends pathlib for all modern filesystem development.
pathlib Beats Legacy os.path| Task | Legacy os.path | Modern pathlib.Path |
|---|---|---|
| Join Paths | os.path.join(base, "data", "file.csv") | base / "data" / "file.csv" |
| Check Existence | os.path.exists(path) | path.exists() |
| File or Dir? | os.path.isfile(p), os.path.isdir(p) | p.is_file(), p.is_dir() |
| Read File | with open(p) as f: f.read() | p.read_text(encoding="utf-8") |
| Write File | with open(p, "w") as f: f.write(s) | p.write_text(s, encoding="utf-8") |
| Get File Extension | os.path.splitext(p)[1] | p.suffix |
| Get Filename Without Ext | os.path.splitext(os.path.basename(p))[0] | p.stem |
Notice how clean, readable, and object-oriented pathlib is!
The division operator / is overloaded in Path objects to provide intuitive, cross-platform path composition:
For quick text or binary file interactions, you don't even need a with open() block:
rglob()pathlib.Path to join paths together?p = Path("data/students.json"), what does p.stem return?pathlib method searches for matching files recursively through all subdirectories?p.read_text(encoding="utf-8") do?In the next lesson, we will build a real-world file management utility: Project: CSV Contact Manager (4: File Handling Advanced).
