Brand Security & Accents: Watermarks & Backgrounds
Whether marking a legal contract as CONFIDENTIAL, a technical proposal as DRAFT, or adding an embossed corporate logo behind text, watermarks provide non-intrusive brand security.
1. Inserting Text Watermarks
- 1Navigate to Design tab > Page Background group (far right) > click Watermark.
- 2Select a quick preset:
- CONFIDENTIAL (Diagonal or Horizontal)
- DO NOT COPY
- DRAFT / URGENT
- 1The faint gray text appears diagonally across every page, sitting behind your body paragraphs and tables.
2. Customizing Watermarks (Logos & Custom Text)
Click Design > Watermark > Custom Watermark...:
- Picture Watermark:
- Click Select Picture... and upload your company logo (PNG or SVG recommended).
- Scale: Auto, 100%, 150%, or 200%.
- Washout Checkbox:
- Checked (Default): Lightens the logo into a subtle, low-opacity background watermark that does not interfere with reading.
- Unchecked: Keeps the image's vibrant full-opacity colors.
- Text Watermark:
- Customize text: e.g.
PROPERTY OF MSK INSTITUTE. - Font, Size, Color (e.g. Light Red or Gray).
- Layout: Diagonal vs. Horizontal.
- Semitransparent: Keeps text faint and unobtrusive.
3. Removing Watermarks
- Go to Design > Watermark > Remove Watermark.
- Under the Hood: Watermarks in Word actually live inside the Header layer! If a watermark refuses to delete, double-click into the Header, click the watermark graphic/WordArt, and press
Delete.
4. Page Background Color (Page Color)
- Go to Design > Page Color:
- Choose a soft parchment tint, dark mode slate, or subtle gradient fill.
- Printing Note: By default, Word does not print page background colors to save printer ink! To force Word to print backgrounds, go to File > Options > Display > check "Print background colors and images".
