Precision Alignment: The Tabs Dialog & Dot Leaders
Novice users often press the spacebar repeatedly to align prices, dates, or signatures on the right side of a line. This is the cardinal sin of word processing—as soon as fonts or margins change, the alignment disintegrates!
Professional documents use Tab Stops and Leader Dots.
1. Types of Tab Stops
When you press the Tab key, the cursor leaps to the next defined Tab Stop:
- 1Left Tab (⫷): Text extends to the right from the tab stop.
- 2Center Tab (⫾): Text centers evenly on the tab stop mark.
- 3Right Tab (⫸): Text extends to the left from the tab stop (perfect for flush right dates and prices).
- 4Decimal Tab (⫸.): Aligns numbers precisely along their decimal point! Whether a number is
₹5.50or₹15,450.75, all decimal dots line up in a flawless vertical column. - 5Bar Tab (|): Draws an automatic vertical divider line at the tab position without indenting text.
2. The Tabs Dialog Box
To configure precise tab stops:
- 1Open the Paragraph dialog box (
Home > Paragraph ↘). - 2Click the Tabs... button at the bottom-left.
- 3In the Tabs dialog box:
- Tab stop position: Type exact ruler position (e.g.
6.5 infor the right margin of a standard letter). - Alignment: Choose Right (or Decimal).
- Leader: Choose leader style:

- 1Click Set, then click OK.
