The OVER() Clause & PARTITION BY Mechanics

To unlock the true analytical power of window functions, you must understand how the OVER() clause divides and organizes rows. The two most critical sub-clauses inside OVER() are:

    ORDER BY: Orders rows within each partition, transforming static aggregates into running cumulative calculations.

The Mechanics of PARTITION BY

Think of PARTITION BY as a localized GROUP BY that does not collapse rows. When you specify:

AVG(salary) OVER (PARTITION BY department_id)

MySQL does the following:

    Breaks the result set into separate virtual buckets based on department_id.

    Computes the average salary for each department bucket independently.
