Deferred Value Updates with useDeferredValue

In React 18, while useTransition allows you to wrap state setter calls directly, you often receive values through component props or external custom hooks where you do not own the originating setState call. useDeferredValue solves this by accepting a value and returning a deferred version of that value that "lags behind" during heavy re-renders.

1. How useDeferredValue Works

When a component renders with a newly updated value:

  1. 1
    React first renders urgently using the previous deferred value so the main thread remains responsive.
  2. 2
    In the background, React attempts a concurrent re-render with the new deferred value.
  3. 3
    If fresh updates arrive before background rendering completes, React interrupts and restarts with the latest value.
TSX
const deferredValue = useDeferredValue(urgentValue);

2. Comparing useTransition and useDeferredValue

FeatureuseTransitionuseDeferredValue
InputWraps state updater: startTransition(() => setState(val))Wraps any value: useDeferredValue(val)
OwnershipRequires control over the state setter function.Works on any prop, hook return, or external value.
Pending StateProvides explicit isPending boolean.Derived via comparison: urgentValue !== deferredValue.
Primary Use CaseEvent handlers initiating actions.Consuming heavy props or derived queries in children.

3. Real-World Implementation: Lagging Child List

In this pattern, a search input updates immediately, while a complex downstream component renders with the deferred search term:

TSX
import React, { useState, useDeferredValue, memo } from "react";

// Heavy child component memoized to prevent re-renders when props don't change
const HeavyProductGrid = memo(function HeavyProductGrid({ query }: { query: string }) {
// Simulate computationally expensive processing
const items = Array.from({ length: 5000 }, (_, i) => ({
id: i,
name: `Enterprise Microservice Product #${i} - Type: ${query || "All"}`,
})).filter((item) => (query ? item.name.toLowerCase().includes(query.toLowerCase()) : true));

return (
<div className="grid grid-cols-3 gap-3 p-4 bg-slate-950 rounded-lg max-h-[500px] overflow-y-auto">
{items.map((item) => (
<div key={item.id} className="p-3 bg-slate-900 border border-slate-800 rounded text-xs text-slate-300">
{item.name}
</div>
))}
</div>
);
});

export function SearchDashboard() {
const [searchTerm, setSearchTerm] = useState("");

// Defer the search term: input stays fast, grid updates concurrently
const deferredSearchTerm = useDeferredValue(searchTerm);

// Derive stale status by comparing immediate and deferred values
const isStale = searchTerm !== deferredSearchTerm;

return (
<div className="p-8 bg-slate-900 text-white min-h-screen">
<h1 className="text-2xl font-bold mb-4">Enterprise Catalog Search</h1>

<div className="flex items-center gap-4 mb-4">
<input
type="text"
value={searchTerm}
onChange={(e) => setSearchTerm(e.target.value)}
placeholder="Filter catalog..."
className="px-4 py-2 bg-slate-800 border border-slate-700 rounded-lg w-80 text-white focus:ring-2 focus:ring-cyan-500 focus:outline-none"
/>

{isStale && (
<span className="text-xs text-amber-400 font-medium animate-pulse">
Updating catalog results...
</span>
)}
</div>

{/* Dim container while background re-render is catching up */}
<div className={`transition-opacity duration-200 ${isStale ? "opacity-60" : "opacity-100"}`}>
<HeavyProductGrid query={deferredSearchTerm} />
</div>
</div>
);
}

4. Crucial Importance of React.memo

useDeferredValue only prevents freezing if the expensive child component is wrapped in React.memo (or uses useMemo).

If HeavyProductGrid were not memoized, it would re-render unconditionally whenever the parent renders (with the old deferred prop first, then with the new deferred prop), rendering twice without deferring computation!
