For years, creating distributable Python libraries required a patchwork of legacy configuration files: setup.py, setup.cfg, requirements.txt, and MANIFEST.in. Executing setup.py executed arbitrary Python code just to read metadata, creating security vulnerabilities and dependency resolution nightmares.
The Python Packaging Authority (PyPA) standardized modern Python packaging under PEP 517, PEP 518, and PEP 621. Today, the universal, declarative configuration file for all modern Python projects is pyproject.toml.
pyproject.tomlA modern pyproject.toml uses standard TOML syntax to declare build systems, metadata, dependencies, and CLI commands:
buildTo compile your source package into standard distribution artifacts, use Python's official build frontend:
dist/ Directory:A Wheel (.whl) is a pre-built zip archive that installs almost instantly via pip without running code on the user's machine.
twineTo share your package with the global Python developer community or install it across cloud servers via pip install:
pyproject.toml defines the build tool (e.g. Hatchling, Flit, Setuptools)?.whl (Wheel) file?pyproject.toml, what does the [project.scripts] section define? In the next lesson, we will apply our configuration and serialization mastery in Project: Config File Manager (12: Data Serialization & File Formats).
