Automatic Resource Management: try-with-resources and AutoCloseable

🔄 Automatic Resource Management: try-with-resources

Introduction

Before Java 7, closing file streams or database connections required messy nested finally blocks. try-with-resources guarantees that any resource implementing java.lang.AutoCloseable is closed automatically when exiting the block!

💻 Clean Stream Handling

1import java.io.BufferedReader;
2import java.io.FileReader;
3import java.io.IOException;
4
5public class TryWithResourcesDemo {
6    public static void main(String[] args) {
7 // Resource declared in parenthesis inside try header:
8        try (BufferedReader reader = new BufferedReader(new FileReader("students.txt"))) {
9            String line;
10            while ((line = reader.readLine()) != null) {
11                System.out.println("Read: " + line);
12            }
13        } catch (IOException e) {
14            System.err.println("File read failed: " + e.getMessage());
15        }
16 // 'reader' is GUARANTEED to be closed here automatically!
17    }
18}
