The Standard Template Library (STL) is a foundational component of modern C++. Designed by Alexander Stepanov, the STL is built upon generic programming, separating data storage from data manipulation through iterators.
| Category | Containers | Strengths |
|---|---|---|
| Sequence Containers | std::vector, std::deque, std::list, std::array | Preserves order of insertion; linear traversal |
| Associative Containers | std::set, std::map, std::multiset, std::multimap | Self-balancing Red-Black trees; sorted O(log N) lookup |
| Unordered Associative | std::unordered_map, std::unordered_set | Hash tables; average O(1) constant time lookup |
| Container Adaptors | std::stack, std::queue, std::priority_queue | Constrained interfaces for specific FIFO/LIFO access |
Because STL containers and algorithms are implemented as C++ templates, the compiler generates specialized, optimized machine instructions during compilation. An std::sort on a contiguous std::vector consistently outperforms C's qsort because template inlining eliminates function-pointer call overhead.
