🚀 Modern C++20 Concepts and Constraints

Introduction

While SFINAE and std::enable_if worked, they produced infamously cryptic 100-line compiler error messages. C++20 revolutionized template metaprogramming with Concepts: first-class language constructs that specify semantic and syntactic requirements on template arguments.

🏛️ Defining and Using Concepts

1#include <iostream>
2#include <concepts>
3#include <string>
4
5// 1. Custom Concept: Requires type to support addition and multiplication
6template <typename T>
7concept ArithmeticType = std::is_arithmetic_v<T>;
8
9// 2. Using the concept in a function template:
10template <ArithmeticType T>
11T computeSquare(T x) {
12    return x * x;
13}
14
15// 3. Using the 'requires' clause syntax:
16template <typename T>
17requires std::integral<T>
18T computeModulus(T a, T b) {
19    return a % b;
20}
21
22// 4. Terse Syntax: 'auto' constrained by Concept (C++20 shorthand):
23void displayNumeric(std::integral auto val) {
24    std::cout << "Integer Value: " << val << "\n";
25}
26
27int main() {
28    std::cout << "Square (5):   " << computeSquare(5) << "\n";
29    std::cout << "Square (2.5): " << computeSquare(2.5) << "\n";
30    std::cout << "Modulus:      " << computeModulus(17, 5) << "\n";
31
32    displayNumeric(42);
33
34    // computeSquare(std::string("MSK"));
35    // 💥 Beautiful clean compiler error:
36 // constraints not satisfied: 'std::is_arithmetic_v<std::string>' evaluated to false
37
38    return 0;
39}

💡 The Value of Concepts

1
Readable Compiler Errors: Pinpoints exactly which condition failed in 2 lines instead of pages of template dump.
2
Self-Documenting Code: Signatures clearly state their operational requirements directly in the interface.
