The C programming language is widely regarded as the cornerstone of modern computing. Developed between 1969 and 1973 by Dennis Ritchie at Bell Laboratories (AT&T), C was designed to build the UNIX operating system. Over half a century later, C remains one of the most widely used and influential programming languages in the world.
Before C was created, systems were primarily written in assembly language or early high-level languages that lacked hardware portability:
| Standard | Year | Nickname | Major Additions |
|---|---|---|---|
| K&R C | 1978 | First Edition | Brian Kernighan & Dennis Ritchie's landmark book specification. |
| ANSI C / C89 | 1989 | C89 / C90 | Standardized by ANSI and ISO; added function prototypes and void pointers. |
| C99 | 1999 | Modern Baseline | Added // comments, inline functions, variable-length arrays, and <stdint.h>. |
| C11 | 2011 | Multi-core | Introduced multithreading (<threads.h>), atomic operations (<stdatomic.h>), and anonymous structs. |
| C17 | 2018 | Bugfix | Technical corrigenda addressing defects in C11 without adding major syntax. |
| C23 | 2024 | Modern Era | Native bool/true/false keywords, constexpr support, and standardized attributes. |
